PHILIPPINES, JANUARY 25, 2022 –Enjoy tales of inner strength and resilience with two brand-new original films The Fallout, from up-and-coming director Megan Park, and KIMI, from seasoned director Steven Soderbergh. From overcoming tragedy to facing one’s greatest fear, these films bring out the best of the human spirit while exploring the depths of personal relationships and integrity. The Fallout premieres Thursday, January 27 and KIMI premieres Thursday, February 10, both streaming exclusively on HBO GO.

Megan Park makes her screenwriting and directorial debut in The Fallout, a compelling exploration of the inexplicable resiliency of life and the hope that emerges out of loss. The film stars Jenna Ortega (Scream, You, Yes Day) as Vada, a high schooler who forms new friendships forged under sudden and tragic circumstances. At the same time, she is simultaneously forced to re-evaluate her relationships with her family, friends, and her views of the world. In the process of reinventing herself, she moves away from her comfortable family routine, starts taking chances with a series of quicksilver decisions that test her own boundaries and push her in new directions. As she spends more time with her friend Mia, played by Maddie Ziegler (2021’s West Side Story, Music), their shared experiences lead her further away from that tragic day and closer to living her life in the now.

The Fallout won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for Narrative Feature and bagged the Brightcove Illumination Award that honours a filmmaker on the rise at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival.

Other cast members include Niles Fitch (This Is Us television series, Roman J. Israel, Esq.), Will Ropp (The Way Back), with John Ortiz (Ad Astra, Bumblebee) and Julie Bowen (Modern Family television series, Hubie Halloween) and Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies, the Divergentmovies).

The creative team for The Fallout also included director of photography Kristen Correl (Ad Astra, John Carter), production designer Justin Dragonas (Vital Signs television series) editor Jennifer Lee (The Skeleton Twins) and costume designer Tasha Goldthwait (An American Pickle, International Falls), with the original score by Finneas O’ Connell (No Time to Die) and PeymonMaskan (Into the Blue) as music supervisor. The soundtrack features an original song written and performed by Maisy StellaandLennon Stella.

KIMI, an original thriller by Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh (No Sudden Move, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Ocean’s Eight), follows a young woman who finds herself in a tight situation when she becomes aware of a violent crime.

Zoë Kravitz (Fantastic Beasts movies, Mad Max: Fury Road) is Angela Childs, a tech analyst who reviews data streams for the Amygdala Corporation, purveyor of the voice-activated companion server KIMI.  Amidst a pandemic, even though restrictions have eased, Angela suffers from agoraphobia and follows a strict routine within the safety of her loft apartment in downtown Seattle.  Between computer breaks, Angela flirts—among other things—with her neighbour across the street, and communicates with her mother, her dentist, and her therapist via video chat, proving she never needs to leave the comforts of home.

But that changes when she hears something horrific in one of the streams she is analysing.  Reporting it over email is deemed too risky, so a trusted co-worker advises Angela to go to their head office downtown and speak directly to executive Natalie Chowdhury and alert her to what Angela is certain is a serious crime.  But Angela hasn’t ventured outside since before the pandemic.  Just getting to the office is a huge challenge, but she’s determined to do the right thing.  But Angela has no idea what will actually happen when—and if—she’s able to step out of her comfort zone.

Other cast members include Byron Bowers (No Sudden Move), Jaime Camil (Schmigadoon), Erika Christensen (Traffic, Ten Days in the Valley), Derek DelGaudio (Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself, The Carbonaro Effecttelevision series), Robin Givens (Riverdale, Batwoman), Charles Halford (Logan Lucky, Constantine television series), Devin Ratray (Side Effects, R.I.P.D.), Jacob Vargas (The 33, Sons of Anarchy television series), with Rita Wilson (executive producer of the Mamma Mia! Films with husband Tom Hanks, The Good Wife television series).

Soderbergh, whose most recent film for the streamer was the star-studded No Sudden Move and who is next returning for Magic Mike’s Last Dancedirected KIMI from a script by acclaimed screenwriter David Koepp.  Soderbergh’s frequent collaborator Michael Polaire and Koepp produced.

Behind the scenes, Soderbergh’s team was comprised of his frequent collaborators, which include production designer Philip Messina (Che and The Hunger Games films), costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (Logan Lucky, Behind the Candelabra, The Greatest Showman), and composer Cliff Martinez (Contagion, Traffic, Hotel Artemis).

PHILIPPINES, 06 DECEMBER 2021 – The fear factor in horror fans across the Philippines got turned up once again as the second season of FOLKLORE is available exclusively on HBO GO and HBO from November 14 with new episodes every Sunday.

As the HBO Asia Original horror anthology series continues to explore cultural traditions and beliefs across Asia, an Erik Matti-directed episode set in the Philippines will release on HBO GO and HBO on December 5.

Formed over the course of our rich history, there are many different traditions, beliefs, and practices that have played important roles in Philippine culture. Even now, the belief in “pamahiin” – sayings and superstitions passed on from generation to generation – continues to influence our everyday lives.

While some beliefs might seem unconventional, many Filipinos continue to follow them due to the possible impacts they may have on our lives, our fortunes, and even our health. In anticipation of the FOLKLORE S2: 7 Days Of Hell, discover some unique Pinoy superstitions, and find out why they continue to be observed today.

  1. SAYING ‘TABI-TABI PO’ OUT LOUD WHILE OUTDOORS

The phrase “tabi-tabi po” translates to “excuse me,” which people say out loud when going through grassy areas, forests or mountains. The reasoning behind this is to avoid disturbing any elemental spirits or ghosts who might be inhabiting those spaces.

The phrase is also especially used upon encountering any anthills or termite mounds, as they are traditionally seen to be indicators of dwarves living nearby and invoking their ire could lead to misfortune or bad health.

  • WEARING A SHIRT INSIDE OUT WHEN LOST

In many parts of the Philippines, nature is often seen to be inhabited by spirits or elementals. Due to this belief, Filipinos are likely to be extra cautious when trekking or hiking in the mountains. For those who feel like they have gotten lost, it is customary to wear a shirt inside out to confuse any elementals who might be playing tricks, breaking any spells that prevent you from reaching your destination.

  • AVOIDING THE ‘WEDDING CURSE’

The word “sukob” refers to a superstition that warns couples about marrying in a year where either of these events happen: the marriage of a sibling, or the death of an immediate family member. The reason for the former is to prevent the splitting of luck between siblings, while the latter is to avoid bringing bad luck into a marriage.

  • DON’T GO HOME IMMEDIATELY AFTER A WAKE OR FUNERAL

The term “pagpag” is used to denote the act of taking a detour after attending a wake or funeral to shake off any evil spirits from following you home. It is generally believed that spirits can lurk around the dead and can bring bad luck to visitors, so the extra trip is supposed to let spirits wander off elsewhere.

Another common belief during wakes is that the direct family of the bereaved should never see off any visitors to avoid transferring any bad luck.

  • CONSULTING AN ‘ALBULARYO’ WHEN SICK

Especially in the remote provinces of the Philippines where medical doctors aren’t as accessible, seeking the help of an “albularyo” – a folk healer well-versed in herbal remedies and spiritual techniques – when sick remains to be a common practice today.

When a person falls ill due to an unknown sickness, an “albularyo” is usually called in to determine whether a person’s illness is caused by normal or supernatural circumstances and performs rituals and ceremonies to aid in healing.

While albularyos are usually seen as healers, opposing them are the “mangkukulam” and the “mambabarang” – witches and summoners who harm people using black magic, especially those have offended them in some way.

These practitioners of magic and mystical arts are showcased in FOLKLORE S2: 7 Days Of Hell, written by Michiko Yamamoto and directed by Erik Matti. Set in the Philippines, the story involves a righteous policewoman and mother who races against time to save her son when he falls dangerously ill from an unknown cause. When her son is given only a few weeks to live, she discovers that his illness is due to a powerful sorcerer’s curse and the only way for her son to survive is for him to apologise and make amends to the sorcerer.

Dolly De Leon (Lourdes), Roshson Barman (Eugene) and Dido Dela Paz (Mang Celso) star in the upcoming episode.

Stream or Download FOLKLORE Season 2 on HBO GO. Download the app at the App Store or Play Store on your device for as low as ₱99.70/month. You can also access HBO GO via Cignal or at https://www.hbogoasia.com/. HBO GO can be accessed via Android TV, Apple TV, LG TV and Samsung Smart TV – and comes with AirPlay and Google Cast functionality.

Directed by Erik Matti, “7 Days Of Hell” premieres exclusively on HBO GO and HBO on December 5, 2021.

PHILIPPINES, 26 NOVEMBER 2021 – The Philippines is one of six Asian countries featured on FOLKLORE Season 2 which premiered exclusively on both HBO GO and HBO on November 14. To the delight of horror fans across the country, helmed by multi-awarded director Erik Matti, “7 Days Of Hell” – the Philippine episode of FOLKLORE Season 2 – will release on HBO GO and HBO on December 5.

With a rich history full of traditions, beliefs, and practices that have shaped our culture over generations, the Philippines is an ideal setting to be explored by the HBO Asia Original horror anthology series. From its stellar cast to its distinctly Pinoy take on horror, here are some standout things viewers can expect from “7 Days Of Hell”.

VISIONARY DIRECTION

When it comes to the horror and thriller genre, few filmmakers can boast a better track record than Erik Matti, whom many consider as the Philippines’ top genre visionary in today’s cinema. Known for his fearless brand of filmmaking, Erik always brings bold and strange flavors to the interesting narratives he brings to life. With its gritty mood and unflinching look into the motivations of the story’s central characters, “7 Days Of Hell” is no exception.

Erik is responsible for gripping crime thrillers like Honor Thy Father (2015), BuyBust (2018), and a number of spine-chilling horror stories including Pa-Siyam (2004), Kuwaresma/The Entity (2019) and Seklusyon (2016).

A GRIPPING, EMOTIONAL NARRATIVE

How far are you willing to go for someone you love?

That is the central question answered by Lourdes, a righteous police woman and mother who races against time to save her son Eugene from an illness of an unknown origin. When Eugene is given only a few weeks to live, she discovers that his illness is of supernatural origin and that a powerful sorcerer has cursed him. The only way for her son to survive is for him to apologise and make amends to the sorcerer. As the clock ticks, she sets out on a desperate quest to save her son and find out what he had done.

The episode cast includes Dolly De Leon (Lourdes), Roshson Barman (Eugene), Princess Amor Lucas (Eunice), Donna Cariaga (Tita Let), Mon Confiado (Jong), Jay Glorioso (Aling Mameng), and Dido Dela Paz (Mang Celso).

HORROR WITH ROOTS IN REALITY

“7 Days Of Hell” showcases the mystical side of the Philippines. Especially in the more remote provinces around the country, there are people who continue to believe in the powers of an “albularyo” (folk healer) as well as sorcerers called “mangkukulam” or “mambabarang”. They rely on their connections with both nature and the supernatural, as the former harness their gifts to heal ordinary illnesses and paranormal inflictions, while the latter two use their powers to cause harm in ways unimaginable. Written by award-winning screenwriter Michiko Yamamoto, the curse seen in the story is based on true accounts of black magic attacks.
